You can book backup care for any qualified dependent, which may include:
- Children
- Step-children
- Foster children
- Elderly parents
- Adult family members with disabilities
Here are the definitions of dependents for whom you can receive backup care financial support:
- A child who:
- Is 12 years old or younger; and
- Is your “qualifying child” under the Internal Revenue Code. In general, a child will be your qualifying child if they live with you for more than half the year, are your child, stepchild, foster child, sibling, step sibling or a descendent of one of them, and you provide over half of their support for the year.
- Another individual who:
- Is your “qualifying relative” under the Internal Revenue Code. In general, an individual will be your qualifying relative if they live with you for more than half the year and if you provide over half of their support for the year;
- Is physically or mentally incapable of self-care; and
- Spends at least eight hours a day in your home
- A spouse who:
- Is physically or mentally incapable of self-care;
- Lives with you for more than half the year; and
- Spends at least eight hours a day in your home
If you are unsure whether your dependent is qualified for this program, you should consult with your tax advisor.
- Download the Helpr app

- Enter the company code “MYCARE”
- Enter name, personal email address, phone number, WIN, date of birth. Then create your password and review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policies
- Once you’ve signed up, complete your family profile
- Enter a credit or debit card to pay for caregiving services not covered by the company-paid benefit
Once you’re signed up, you can start sending invites through the app to your trusted family members, friends, neighbors, and sitters to sign up and join your personal caregiving network. You and your trusted care providers will mutually agree on an hourly rate.
Once your trusted care providers have completed the sign-up process, you can send requests for backup care to your network and begin booking care.
Here’s an example of how Helpr works:
When your child’s school gets canceled due to weather, you want to book backup care so you can go to work and not have to take the day off. You will send a request for care to your own list of providers in the app, the first person to respond to the request is booked for the day, time, and location of care you specified.
The care cost you and your care provider agreed on is $15 per hour. Sam's Club covers $13 per hour, so the remaining cost to you is $2 per hour, which will be charged to the credit or debit card you have saved in your Helpr app.
After you clock in for your shift at Sam's Club, you'll check in on the Helpr app to activate your company-paid care benefit. Your care provider is paid directly for their services through the app.
Backup care helps when your regular care plans fall through. When backup care is used so you don’t have to miss a shift at Sam’s Club, the company will help pay for this care. You can use in-home care or an available care center for backup care.
- In-home care: Your trusted family members, friends, neighbors, and sitters can be added to your caregiving network in the Helpr app. Once in your network, you can book care with them, and they will be paid through the Helpr app for their caregiving services. Parents of children living in different homes and family members living in the same home do not qualify as paid care providers.
- Center care: Find a local care center you would like to use, or select one of Helpr’s partner centers for priority access to backup care. Helpr’s partner centers include the Learning Care Group and Bümo.
Core Care Concierge connects you with a dedicated care consultant through the Helpr app. The consultant will help you with sourcing, recruiting, and vetting caregivers that meet your needs. Unless the caregiving services meet the requirements of the company-paid backup care benefit (booking backup care so you can make a Sam’s Club shift), you will be responsible for the cost of the care provider. Core Care Concierge can help you find both in-home care and center care and you can use this service to set up your regular care, or to source backup care providers in advance if you need to expand your network.
Examples of Core Care services include:
- Daycares
- Babysitters
- School transportation
- Elder care providers: CNAs, home health aides, home care aides
- Senior care facilities
- Public benefits coordination
Support resources
Through the Helpr app, you also have access to live expert webinars, safety courses, CPR certification, caregiver blog articles, toolkits, and discounts to caregiver resources.
The company-paid benefit only applies to backup care for qualified dependents when care is booked to ensure the associate is available to work their shift at Sam’s Club. To help associates when regular care plans fall through, Sam’s Club will pay up to $13/hour for up to 80 hours/year for backup care. You need to download the app and sign up before you can book any care through Helpr.
Here’s how to activate the company-paid backup care benefit once you’ve downloaded the app and signed up:
- Book a backup caregiver in the app so you don’t have to miss work.
- Once the caregiver arrives at the designated location to care for your dependent, they must check-in through the Helpr app.
- When you get to work at Sam’s Club, you must clock in.
- After clocking in at work, you need to also check in through the Helpr app. This step confirms your clock-in status to activate the benefit and your care provider can get paid directly through the app.
The process is a bit different if a care center is used for backup care, but the app will prompt you on the appropriate steps.
If you need more than the 80 hours of backup care the company benefit covers, you can still use the app to organize care, but you’ll pay the full cost of the care. Any extra costs above the company benefit amount of $13 per hour for 80 hours a year will be charged to the credit or debit card saved to your Helpr account. You can keep track of your used benefit hours in the app.
Helpr is designed to be a tax-free program and is not reported as wages for federal income tax or payroll taxes in Boxes 1, 3, and 5 of your W2. The program is not, however, entirely tax-free in New Jersey. This is because New Jersey taxes the amount Sam’s Club pays for back-up daycare you receive through Helpr. As a result, if you are an associate in New Jersey you will owe state income tax on the amount of the Helpr benefit you use, and the amount of the Helper benefit you use will be included in Box 16 on the W2 issued by your employer each year. To help offset your additional state tax liability, Sam’s Club pays the required income tax withholding to the state on your behalf at the time you use the Helpr benefit. The amount Sam’s Club pays to the state for you is taxable income to you and will be included as wages in in Boxes 1, 3, 5, and 16 wages of your W2. It will also be included in the amount reported in Box 17 as state income tax paid. If New Jersey’s tax rules change Sam’s Club will adjust the withholding and reporting process accordingly. You should consult with your accountant or tax advisor with any questions about your taxes.
